    Native Celebrate Golden Wedding
Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Reinking Married April 4, 1879 - Many Help Celebrate
Mr. and Mrs. Chris Reinking widely known and highly respected citizens of Tipton, on Thursday, April 4th, 1929, observed the fiftieth return of their wedding day. But a limited number of married couples are granted such a privilege. In accordance with the wish of the jubiliant pair, both of whom are loyal members of the Lutheran Church at Tipton appropriate services were conducted in Zion's Lutheran Church, a large number of relatives, friends and acquaintances participating.
The local pastor J. Kiesow, briefly addressed the celebrating couple in both the American and German language, taking for his texts Romans 8, 38-39, and Isaiah 46, 4. The Quartet consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Will Seidal, Mrs. Warren Hobbi* and J.H. Pottberg, accompanied by Kathryn Reinking renedered two beautiful selections, entitled "I Shall Be Like Him" for their first number and "Silver Threads Among the Gold." as their concluding song.
After the services at the Church the celebration continued on the Reinking farm northwest of town. A beautiful basket dinner was served under the direction of the Ladies Aid of Zion's Lutheran Church. The afternoon was spent in pleasant conversation, all present enjoying a good time.
The dinner room was beautifully decorated in Gold and White crepe paper, te streamers leading to a gorgeous Angel Food Cake, that was presented to the honorees by their children, which was baked and decorated by Margaret Greif.
The honored couple received many beautiful and useful gifts from those present, in the late afternoon all departed wishing Mr. and Mrs. Reinking many more happy years together. At about nine o'clock the Tipton Band surprised them and came to their home in town and played three beautiful selections for them, which pleased them very much.
Mr. Reinking was born at West Palia, Germany, April 27th, 1850, when 6 weeks old, his mother passed away and at the age of 7 years his ****** passed away leaving h*** **** when 17 he came to America working at Iowa and in **** *he earlier settlers taking a homestead in Osborne county. On April 4th 1879 he was united in Holy Matrimony to Miss Katherine Gunn, who was born in Schleswich Holstein, Germany, October 17, 1861. In 1875, she came to America with her parents living in Osborne county, living there only a short time after their marriage, they moved to Mitchell county on a farm 1 1-4 miles north of Tipton, where they resided until they moved to their retired home in Tipton, in the fall of 1927.
Mr. and Mrs. Reinking celebrated their Silver Wedding anniversary 25 years ago and this month had the honor to celebrate their fiftieth which is a destination not many reach. To their union thirteen children were born, nine of whom are living and all had the pleasure of being with their parents that day with the exception of one son, John, who lives in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Reinking have 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
May the remainder of the life of the principal celebrants in this rare event be fraught with such blessings as flow from the inexhaustable source of divine grace in Christ Jesus.

    Obituary
Kathryn Mary Nicholas Inness (2-14-1905 to 3-29-1998)

Kathryn Mary Nicholas died at the Morton County Hospital, Elkhart, KS, March 29, 1998. She was born to Ralph and Mary Reinking Nicholas on February 14, 1905 in Tipton, KS. When Kathryn was one and a half years old, another daughter was born to this union, Thelma Laurietta. When the girls were small their mother, Mary, died (Dec. 1908).
When Kathryn was 6 years old, her father married Bertha Mayhood.
This instantly brought her and Thelma another sister, Inez Mary, who was 4 years old.
In 1911 Kathryn’s family moved from Pierceville, KS to Two Buttes, near Lamar, Colorado. While they lived at Two Buttes, another daughter was born, Nina Bertha. At this time, Kathryn was 10 years old. In the early 1920’s they moved near Boyero, Colorado. Many trees around the Karval area came from their nursery, called “The Oasis”.
Kathryn spent one summer at summer school at Oberlin, KS and went to college at Hays, KS for two summers. She taught school 5 years before her marriage to Warren E. Leonard, June 23, 1934.
To this union two children were born. Gwendal Leon and Onnalee Jean. Kathryn, with her son and daughter, moved to Karval, CO in the fall of 1945, where she taught grades 1 through 4 for two years. In July, 1947, Kathryn became Postmaster in Karval and worked until her retirement in June, 1974.
In 1948 Kathryn was united in marriage to Emanuel Sears “Manny” Inness. This brought to her another family - 4 step daughters and their husbands. Edith and Charlie Summers of Holly, CO, Margaret and Walter Steiner of Kit Carson, CO, Shirley and Chet White of Antioch, Ill and Ruby and Calvin Hixson of Fowler, CO. Her husband, Manny died in June, 1971.
Kathryn was very active in all the activities her children were in. School activities, 4-H, Music and Church kept her busy and she enjoyed sharing many learning and enjoyable experiences with Gwendal and Onnalee.
She was an avid gardener, which she surely inherited from her father. Even after she retired, you could see her working in her yard as early as 5:00 A.M. Her garden and yard was her relaxation and her pride. Roses were among her many specialties. Kathryn was very fond of her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren and loved them the same as her children. She always remembered their birthdays and made sure they each had a card that fit them.
After retiring from the Post Office, Kathryn continued her work in the Karval Church of the Nazarene as Sunday School teacher and was always faithful to all the services she could attend. She also went into full time work with R.S.V.P. (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), and especially enjoyed being a part of the Karval Keenagers, playing the Banjo. Also, she enjoyed crocheting, making afghans for all of her grandchildren.
In 1986, she moved to Elkhart and lived with her daughter and family. While she was living at home (Karval, CO) she was able to be close to her son and his family. She enjoyed the closeness of both families and was happy to be with them. It was very important to her to be close to her Doctor, whom she had so much confidence in. She felt that he gave her many added years of quality life.
She continued to play her banjo at church and for many activities in Elkhart.
She played for several hospital fund raising activities and would always get a standing ovation. She played her banjo with her daughter playing the accordian and her son-in-law playing the guitar. Her fingers always remained nimble and strong and she could keep the music moving while her audience tapped their toes. Although her body would become weaker and weaker, she always had the strength to play the banjo.
Kathryn missed her friends and family at Karval and tried to keep in contact with them as much as possible. She will always be appreciated and remembered for her concern and compassion for her family.
Although she continually tried to be strong for others, she found that losing her son, Gwendal, to cancer in July, 1995, was the hardest struggle in life she had to face. She had very fond memories of Gwendal and she missed him very much.
Her latest highlight of her life was to be able to attend her granddaughter’s
wedding. (Gwendolyn and J.J. - 1996) She had all the Home Health Care nurses taking very good care of her so her dream could come true. She was very fond of each of her daily Home Health Care nurses and they were special friends to her.

    Obituary
    Gwendal Leon Leonard
Gwendal Leon Leonard was born April 16, (1935), to Warren E. Leonard and Kathryn M. (Nicholas) Inness at their home 10 miles east of Karval.
He spent the early years working on the farm and was already driving wheat trucks to Hugo at the age of 10 for Jim Middleton. At the age of 18 he married his childhood sweetheart in June of 1953. They started their family in a small house one mile east of Karval.
During the time they were building their family, Gwendal worked different places and jobs such as farming and truck driving. In 1959 he started working for the county road and bridge crew as a transportation safety technician (better known as a "grader man").
In 1970 he went to work for his father on the ranch east of Karval and later moved his family to the present homestead four miles east of Karval. It was during this time that he became the mentor to his children as they participated in school, sports, music, ranching and learning the general principles to prepare them for life. It was also during this time that they perfected the fine art of chasing coyotes and antelope, and especially to watch out for ravines and old basements.
He started his community leadership in the early 60's by umpiring Little League, Babe Ruth and town team baseball. He and his wife became 4-H general leaders in 1965 where they led for 15 years. During this time he taught many young people how to square dance. After several years of farming and ranching he decided to run for county commissioner in 1981. After winning the election he served two terms from 1982 to 1990 as the best darn commissioner that Lincoln County ever had.
During and after his term as commissioner his life branched out into many directions by joining lots of different organizations. He was a charter member of both the Karval Lions Club and the Karval Volunteer Fire Department where he served in most leadership roles in each organization.
He also served on the Lincoln County EMS Council, the Alumni Association and the Lincoln County Stockmen's Association where he was the past president. In 1991 he became a member of the Lincoln Community Hospital Board where he was presently serving as chairman of the board.
He served in a number of capacities in many other organizations and was always willing to lend a helping hand. During the course of his life some of his understudies included Red Skelton and the Smothers Brothers. It is probably because of these people that we enjoyed knowing him as a Homecoming Clown, Santa Claus, Tail Twister and overall entertainer and jokester wherever he went.
Gwendal was diagnosed as having leukemia on April 22, 1995, and although he fought the disease with all his mite, he passed away July 15, 1995 at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs at the age of 60.
Gwendal is survived by his wife, Pat, his five sons, Allen and children Aaron, Adam and Cybil of Colorado Springs; Leon and his wife, Sandy, and their children Brooke, of Ordway; and Bill and Bill's wife, Tina., of Fowler (Gwendal's first great-grandchild is soon to arrive and is sure to be Bill and Tina's joy in their time of sorrow); his son Larry and his wife, Cindy and their children, Levi, Zane and Jake of Karval; Carlos and wife, Michelle and children, Tiffany, Shaun, and Colton of Karval, and Jenisha and Shayla Bowerman of Colorado Springs; Patrick and wife, Ginny, and children Micheal, Amanda, Jessica and Ashleigh of Karval; one daughter, Enola, of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by his sister, Onnalee Harrell and husband, Millard, and children Gwendolyn and Kelby and Kelby's wife, Stephanie of Elkhart, Kan.; his mother, Katheryn Innes of Elkhart, Kan., his mother in law Gladys Sherman of La Junta, a brother-in-law, Bill Sherman and wife Sandy; sister-in-law Ruth Wheeler and Guy Simone. Gwendal and Pat also provided a home for 17 foster children including Theresa, Sheryl, Bandon, Willie and Justin. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as his step-mother Marvis June of Limon.

    Obituary
GWENDAL LEON LEONARD (4-16-1935 to 7-15-1995)

Gwendal Leon Leonard was born April 16, 1935 to Warren E. Leonard and Kathryn M. (Nicholas) Inness at their home, 10 miles east of Karval.
Gwendal spent his early years working on the farm and was driving wheat trucks to Hugo at the age of 10 for Jim Middleton. At the age of 18 he married his childhood sweetheart, June 13, 1953. They started their family in a small house one mile east of Karval.
During their time they were building their family, Gwendal worked different places and jobs, such as farming and truck driving. In 1959 he started working for the county road and bridge crew as a transportation safety technician (better known as a “grader man”).
In 1970 he went to work for his father on the ranch east of Karval and later moved his family to the present homestead four miles east of Karval. It was during this time that he became the mentor to his children as they participated in school sports, music, ranching and learning the general principles to prepare them for life. It was also during this time that they perfected the fine art of chasing coyotes and antelope, which taught them to watch out for ravines and old basements.
Gwendal started his community leadership in the early 60’s by umpiring Little League, Babe Ruth and town team baseball, He and his wife, Pat, became 4-H general leaders in 1965, where they led for 15 years. During this time he taught many young people how to square dance.
After several years of farming and ranching, Gwendal decided to run for county commissioner in 1981. After winning the election, he served two terms from 1982 to 1990 as the best darn commissioner that Lincoln County ever had.
During and after his term as commissioner, his life branched out into many directions by joining many different organizations. He was a charter member of both the Karval Lions Club and the Karval Volunteer Fire Department, where he served in most leadership roles in each organization. He also served on the Lincoln County EMS Council, the Alumni Association and the Lincoln County Community Hospital Board, where he was presently serving as chairman of the board. He served in a number of capacities in many other organizations and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
During the course of his life, some of his understudies included Red Skelton and the Smothers Brothers. It is probably because of these people that we enjoyed knowing him as a Homecoming Clown, Santa Claus, Tail Twister and overall entertainer and jokester wherever he went.
Gwendal was diagnosed as having leukemia on April 22, 1995, and although he fought the disease with all his might, he passed away July 15, 1995 at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs at the age of 60.
Gwendal is survived by his wife, Pat, his five sons: Allen and children, Aaron, Adam and Cybil of Colorado Springs; Leon and his wife, Sandy and their children, Brooke of Ordway and Bill and Bill’s wife, Tina of Fowler. (Gwendal’s first great-grandchild is soon to arrive and is sure to be Bill and Tina’s joy in their time of sorrow); his son Larry and his wife Cindy and their children, Levi, Zane and Jake of Karval; Carlos and his wife, Michelle and their children, Tiffany, Shaun and Colton of Karval and Jenisha and Shayla Bowerman of Colorado Springs; Patrick and his wife Ginny, and their children Micheal, Amanda, Jessica and Ashleigh of Karval; one daughter, Enola, of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by his mother, Kathryn Inness of Elkhart, KS, his sister Onnalee Harrell and her husband, Millard and their children Kelby and his wife Stephanie of Hutchinson and Gwendolyn of Salina; his mother in law, Gladys Sherman of La Junta, a brother in law, Bill Sherman and wife Sandy; sister in law Ruth Wheeler and Guy Simone. Gwendal and Pat also provided a home for 17 foster children, including Theresa, Sheryl, Brandon, Willie and Justin. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins as well as his step mother, Marvis June of Limon.
Funeral Services were held July 19, 1995 at the Karval School with Rev. Ron Clark officiating. The musical selection was a ‘Tribute To Dad’.
Casket bearers were Robert Elliot, Robert Webb, Robert Williams, Darrel Dutro, Lyle Hilferty, Robert Capps, Carl Johnson and Keith Capps. Honorary escorts were the EMS Council, Lincoln County Stockmen, Lincoln County employees and the 4-H Foundation.
