Bennie Barela - Pueblo Chieftain - April 25, 1999 - Bennie Barela, 76, departed this life April 22, 1999, at Parkview Episcopal Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Born on Oct. 12, 1922, in Tollerburg (Trinidad). Served in the U.S. Army during World War II, retired as a security guard for Pueblo Army Depot. Mr. Barela also worked 20 years for Pueblo County Board for Developmental Disabilities. He was a faithful working member of the American GI Forum Pueblo Chapter, DAV Chapter 39, Moose Lodge 19, Eagles Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Barela was wounded during his service time and received a Purple Heart. Preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Charlotte Barela- brothers, Gilbert and Eloy Barela. Survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Theresa Marie Barela- children, LeRoy Gurule, Denver, Rosalie (LeeRoy) Martinez, Nita (Ken) Wheeler, all of Pueblo- nine grandchildren, Cindy Gurule, Rosalie Gurule, both of Arizona, Gary Gurule, Denver, Kortney Roldan, Kristil Roldan Padula, Eric Hernandez, Stephen Hernandez, Johnathan Wheeler, Kendra Wheeler, all of Pueblo- 11 great-grandchildren- sister-in-law, Evelyn Barela, Pueblo- and other relatives and friends also survive. Visitation, noon until 5 p.m. today. Both services, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Rosary vigil, 7 p.m. Monday. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Rev. John Waters, S.J., celebrant. Graveside military honors by Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team at Imperial Memorial Gardens. The Barela family will receive friends at 171 Cornell Circle, and the American GI Forum Hall, 125 E. River St., following the burial rites.
