Theresa M. Barela - Pueblo Chieftain - April 06, 2003 - Theresa M. Barela, 80, departed this life April 3, 2003. Born Sept. 20, 1922, in Sopris, Colo. She was a homemaker known for her tantalizing green and red chile dishes. She also knitted and did crochet work. Her life revolved around her grandchildren. She was a little lady, but when she spoke and gave that certain look, the children knew grandma meant business. Predeceased by her parents, Melisendro and Eulalia (Baca) Gutierrez; her beloved husband of 54 years, Bennie Barela; and several siblings and other relatives. She was a member of the American GI Forum Ladies Auxiliary and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She leaves to cherish her memory children, LeRoy Gurule, Rosalie Martinez, Nita (Ken) Wheeler; sister-in-law, Evelyn Barela; grandchildren, Cindy Gurule, Rosalie Gurule, Gary Gurule, Kortney (Rob Smith) Roldan, Kristil (Brad) Padula, Eric (Karlie Ginther) Hernandez, Stephen Hernandez, John Wheeler, Kendra Wheeler; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as other relatives and friends. The Barela family would like to thank the Sangre de Cristo Hospice for their loving care of our mother. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Rev. James F. Koenigsfeld, celebrant. Interment, Imperial Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends at 171 Cornell Circle.
