GEORGE “SLIM” WASHINGTON LEONARD (2-22-1914 to 5-23-1997)
George W. “Slim” Leonard was born Feb. 22, 1914, in Fillmore County, Strang, NE, to Harvey and Jessie (Mullikin) Leonard. He was the third child in a family of twelve.
He departed this life May 23, 1997 at his home in Twisp, WA at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 1 day. He had been bedfast for over three years.
George’s parents moved from Nebraska with their first four children, to the Arkansas Valley in Colorado in 1919. Over the years the family lived in several areas of Eastern Colorado, including Cheraw, Hugo, Edison and Karval.
In 1936, he left Colorado and went to Orofino, Idaho. He married Louise Dicus that year and that marriage was later dissolved.
He married Irene Shaw on Dec. 21, 1939. She had a stillborn baby girl on April 1, 1940, and Irene died that same day.
Warren was in a car accident July, 1968. He was left paralyzed and was in the hospital the rest of his life. He died Jan. 24, 1981.
Lula died April 16, 1983 while they were living in Joseph, Oregon. George then moved to Twisp, WA, where he spent his remaining years.
Doris Dearmond was his companion and caregiver since 1984 and lives in the family home in Twisp, WA.
Survivors are Doris; son, Walter; three granddaughters; two great granddaughters of the Twisp area; three brothers, Richard of Orofino, ID, Don of Thornfield, Mo and Marion of Anderson, CA; six sisters, Leila Frazier of Calhan, CO, Ida Sterrett of Cheyenne, WY, Kathleen Lister of Loveland, CO, Verna Miller of Colorado Springs, CO, Velma McDonald of Rocky Ford, CO and Jeanne Mays of Olney Springs, CO; a nephew, Donnie Leonard who lived with George and Lula during part of his teens and mourns the loss of a special uncle. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Also preceeding him in death were his parents and his brother, Warren Leonard of Limon, CO.
NOT THE END BUT THE BEGINNING OF A LIFETIME OF BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES.
