    Susan M. Smith, age 50, former Oral resident and most recently of Hot Springs, died Thursday, July 1, 1999 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
    Visitation was held Monday, July 5, 1999 at Isburg-McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs.
    Funeral Services were Tuesday, July 6, 1999 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hot Springs with Pastor Will Olsen officiating.
    Susan was born April 2, 1949 in Sioux Falls, SD to Keith and Helen (Schwebach) Rodman. She grew up in the Dell Rapids and Sioux Falls area and moved with her family to Hot Springs where she attended and graduated from high school in 1967. She attended the National College of Business in Rapid City and later began her working career which included various positions, her first being a Secretary in the business office at Southern Hills General Hospital in Hot Springs. She married Fred Smith on August 2, 1969 at Smithwick, farmed and ranched with her husband for several years, then was employed as a Loan Processor for PCA in Hot Springs, was a Secetary at the Middle School in te Special Education Department and then became the Headstart County Coordinator. She returned to the farm at Oral until moving to Hot Springs in May of 1998.
    She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Hot Springs VFW Auxiliary and served as the President of PTO in the Oral School District at the time when small, rural schools were being closed.
    Sue enjoyed spending her leisure time in reading, writing poetry, cooking and had a special affection for children. Along with her special love for her grandchildren she will be remembered for her big heart and sensitivity to even the slightest hurt, whether it be her own or those she loved or was close to.
    Grateful to have shared in her life are her husband of almost 30 years, Fred Smith, Hot Springs, along with their son, Patrick and Traci Smith, Montrose, CO, their daughters, Shauna (Mrs. Mick) Hoglund of Del Rapids, SD and Stacy (Mrs. Bill) Langer of Buffalo Gap, SD and six grandchildren; her mother, Helen Hattervig, Sioux Falls; one sister, Diane (Mrs. Tom) Nelson, Sioux Falls; mother-in-law, Rosalie Smith, Hot Springs; step-brothers: Roger Hattervig, Sioux Falls, Mike Hattervig, Hot Springs and Jack Hattervig, Rapid City, step-sisters, Cindy Brany of Denver, CO and Wendy Heckman of Parker, CO and a host of friends.
    She was preceded in death by her father and step-father.
    Arrangements have been placed in the care of Isburg-McColley's Chapel of the Hills Hot Springs.

Frederick (son of Junior Clifford Smith and Rosalie Marie Thompson) was born on 03 Jan 1947 in Hayes, Ellis County, Kansas; was christened on 07 April 1947 in Brewster, Thomas County, Kansas; died on 28 Sep 2014.     When Fred and Susan were married, Fred adopted Patrick.
