    Frank Shelby Bennett, a native son of Tombstone and long-time landholder in Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed, passed away on 10 July 2005. Shelby was a leader at both the community and national level, and a lifelong example of watershed conservation. Shelby will be missed by many friends and family.

    Published Jul 13, 2005 in the "Sierra Vista Herald" Sierra Vista, Arizona " March 14, 1931 - July 10, 2005 BISBEE - Frank Shelby Bennett was born on March 14, 1931 in Bisbee, Ariz., and passed away at his home in Tombstone, Ariz., on July 10, 2005. Shelby was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Saunders Bennett and Kathelen McClelland Bennett; his brother, Michael Bennett; his sister, Bennie Lucille Davis; his wife, Yvonne (Kirkham) Bennett; and his wife, Joyce Bennett. Shelby graduated from Tombstone High School in 1949 and went to Tulane University, graduating in 1954 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He was commissioned in the Navy, went through flight training and was assigned to the VQ-1 Squadron, Electronic Counter-measures Squadron #1 based in Iwakuni, Japan. He worked at the Electronic Proving Ground at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., in the Civil Service as an engineer. He was given a Special Service Award from the U.S. Army; was President of the Arizona Society of Professional Engineers; was named 1982 Engineer of the Year in Government by the Arizona Society of Professional Engineers and named to Who's Who in Arizona 1984-85. He also was in the U.S. Naval Reserve and retired from the Navy in 1979 with the rank of commander. Shelby also served on the Tombstone Boy Scouts of America Council; was an Arizona Hunter Safety Instructor; was a Life Member of the National Rifle Association; was past moderator and a lifelong member of Tombstone Community Congregational United Church of Christ; was past president and a member of the Southwest Pioneer Cowboys Association; a member of the Arizona Cattlemen's Association; a member of the National Cattlemen's Association; and a member of Landowner, Lessee, Sportsman Relations Committee. Shelby was also Past Commander of the Tombstone DAV (lifetime member), a lifetime member of the VFW, and a member of the American Legion, Post 24. Shelby is survived by his sister, Freda Parrott; his wife, Gwen; children, Gerry (Gail) Bennett, Bill (James Doolan) Bennett and Shelly (Eric) Maas; step-children, Carolyn (Jerry) Eaton, Julia (Frank) Granados, Dianne (Rob) Smith, Barbara Dupnik, Mary (Max) Alvarez; grandchildren, Holly (James) Howard; Jesse Rose Maas; step-grandchildren, Derek Maas; Carrie Jo Maas; Katrina Eaton; Amy, Sarah, Frankie, and Melissa Granados; Alex and Andrew Alvarez; Heather, Nicole, and Courtney Burkhardt; and McKenzie and Tyler Smith; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2005, at the Tombstone Community Congregational United Church of Christ; Second & Allen Streets; Tombstone, Arizona. Interment will in the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

    Frank married Connie Jean Thompson on 29 Nov 1986 in Tombstone, Cochise County, Arizona. Connie (daughter of Dwight Lee Thompson, Sr. and Emilee Vada Frodin) was born on 11 Dec 1945 in St. Francis, Cheyenne County, Kansas; died on 22 Jan 1997 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona; was buried in Ashes spread somewhere in the mountians around Scottsdale Arizona .
