6. Benjamin Franklin Rice was born on 04 Sep 1856 in Jackson County, Kansas (son of Rufus Rice and Elizabeth Jane Owens); died on 12 Nov 1926 in Dillon, Summit County, Colorado. Notes:
According to the 1870 Kansas censes he was 13 years old and living with a clergyman, Benjamin Lewis, and family in Lecompton, Douglas County Kns. Post office Clinton. Possible adoption.
He married Mabel Carle in Colorado. He had been a school teacher in Kansas and moved to Colorado in 1879. He was a faro bank dealer, stage driver for Nott's Stage, miner, hauled ore from Peru Creek to Keystone railhead. He also had a general store in Montezuma and a saloon in Dillon.

In the papers : "On the Matter of the Estate of Rufus Rice Deceased. Oct. 10th, 1868 Rufus W. Rice Probate #54 Jackson Co. Ks. Courthouse.
Named the following heirs: Nancy J. Rice, now Nancy J. Zook; Stephen Rice; Sarah E. Rice, where abouts not known; Minors: Margret Rice, Benjamin F. Rice, Malissa A. Rice, Martha J. Rice. Guardian John A. Owens. Nancy and Stephen each recieved $13.00 and John A. Owens received $52.00.
The heirs paid John Hogalan from Marion Co, Ohio $25.07. Rufus had owed Mr. Hogalan $20.00 since December 12, 1859.
Although the estate was settled in 1868, there is an appraisal done on his estate on November 18, 186(2?) signed by Byron Steward and D. S. Rice Total for the estate was $175.
There also appeared in the Holton Newspaper for 3 times a notice that Elizabeth Ransier formerally Elizabeth Rice, widow of Rufus Rice to his legal representative that she was claiming half of the property. The property being north east quarter of section 8, township 9, Range 16, except 15 acres off, and in the north west corner; and one acre out of the north east corner; in the county and State above named. Jackson County, Kansas. Appeared Nov, 1867. That land had been given by law to Rufus Rice as a homestead.
There was also a claim for $39.00 from Nancy Hoaglin. It was signed by the heirs: Elisabeth Ransier Widow of Rufus Rice, Margaret Rice, Benjamin Rice, Stephen Rice, Malissa Rice, Martha Jane Rice, Nancy J. Zook. Dec. 30 th, 1865
According to a cousin (Alan Rice) Steven, Sarah E., and Nancy J. were Ruffus's children from his first marriage.
Ruffus was one of a large family in New York. He left home at a young age and became a mill wright. He then worked his was across the country building mills. He married Elizabeth Owens in Indiana and moved to Kansas. He built a mill in Atchinson, Kansas also. He was also a circuit rider preacher. He left Elizabeth to farm and raise all the children (seven at home). He is buried on the old farmstead in an unmarked grave (Steward Cemetery). According to another cousin, Rose) he was not liked by his children.Rufus married Elizabeth Jane Owens. Elizabeth was born on 12 Dec 1830 in Indiana; died on 04 Feb 1904 in Jackson County, Kansas; was buried on 06 Feb 1904. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Elizabeth purchased land in Jackson County, address of the land was Hoyt, Kansas, 5 miles north 3 1/2 miles west of Hoyt, Ks. 2 miles west of the old Point Pleasant School Dist. 13. According to Rose Harper (granddaughter of Josephine Pooler), Rufus, Thaddeous Owens (Elizabeth's brother?), Pillip Ransier (Elizabeth and James Ransier's son. are buried east of the row of trees east of the house. The house is no longer there. Graves unmarked.
Elizabeth married Rufus who was twenty years older. When he died she married James Ransier who was also about twenty years older. After he died she married John G. Bell who was twenty years older. On an average she was married to each man about 15 years.
According to the 1900 federal census she was living with her daughter Josephine Alice Ransier Pooler and her husband Benjamin F. Pooler. Jackson Co., Douglas Township, Kansas.

From the Holton Signal, Feb. 10, 1904 Death of an old Settler
Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Bell died at home in Hoyt on Thursday, February 4th, aged 73 years, 1 month, and 22 days.
The deceased came to Kansas in 1855 with her husband Benjamin Rice, and settled in Douglass township on the place where she died and where some years later Mr. Rice died. They were among the first settlers in this part of Kansas, and were highly respected, useful citizens. In later years the deceased married again. She was the mother of nine children, five of whom have preceded her to the land beyond the skies. Those now living are B.R. Rice of Dillon, Colo., Malissa A. Rose, of Elmont, Kansas; Martha J. Collins of Yampa Colorado, and Mrs. Josie Pooler of Hoyt.
The funeral was held on Saturday and the remains buried at the Point Pleasant cemetery.
From the Tribune Holton, Jackson County, Kansas Feb. 19, 1904
Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Bell departed this life, Tuesday, February 4th, aged 78 years 1 month and 22 days. The deceased came to Kansas with her husband, Rufus Rice, in 1855 and settled in Douglas township., Mr Rice was one of our first pioneer preachers and was called to his reward some years ago. Mrs. Rice married again in later years. She leaves four children: Mrs. Rose of Elmont; Mrs. Martha J. Collins of Yampa, Colorado; B. F. Rice of Dillon, Colorado and Mrs. Josie Pooler of this place, all being present to see their mother laid to rest. The funeral was held on Saturday, at the Point Pleasant church conducted by Rev. Stewart, his text being, "From the Bread of Life," taken from the 6th Chapter of John, 35th verse. The--remains were laid to rest in the Steward cemetery to await the first resurrection, of which Grandma will have a part. As those who loved her stood by her bedside and watched her quietly pass away from this world of sin and suffering they thanked God that her suffering was over for they did not sorrow as those who have no hope.Children:
