    Mrs. Mamie Nicholas Dies Suddenly
Friends here were shocked Saturday afternoon to learn of the death of Mrs. Mamie Nicholas at her home in the south part of town. Although Mrs. Nicholas has not been in the best of health for some time, her condition was not regarded serious until a short time ago. She had suffered a severe attack of chronic asthma only a few days before but was up and about the house until a few hours before her passing. It will be a distinct shock to her son Corp. Vandon Nicholas, overseas.
Following is the obituary as read at the funeral service Tuesday:
Mamie Jane Hiddleson, the daughter of Chilton and Alice Hiddleson, was born in Buffalo county, Nebraska, on February 4, 1889, and departed this life at her home in Rippey, Ia., on Saturday evening, June 26, 1943, at eight o'clock, at the age of 54 years, 4 months and 22 days.
On August 6, 1906, she was united in marriage to B. J. Nicholas. To this union were born six children. They are Mrs. Delia McDowell of Rippey, Corporal Vandan Nicholas, U. S. Army, overseas; Donald Nicholas of Dawson, Paul Nicholas of Peoria, Ill.; Veona Fisher of Linden and Marjorie at home.
Mrs. Nicholas came to Rippey from Nebraska when she was five years old, and has resided in and near Rippey continuously until her death. She was a loyal member of the Rippey Service Star Legion, and as recently as June 24th participated in the ceremonies of the State Convention in session at Rippey.
She was an ideal mother, and spent her strength and uncertain health in living service for her family. She gathered around her a large circle of friends and neighbors through the years who loved her dearly. To them the shock of her passing is severe indeed. For more than a week prior to her death she suffered from an attack of asthma, and on Saturday became prostrated, passing away at eight o'clock in the evening.
There remains to mourn her passing, besides the sorrowing husband and children mentioned above, two sisters, Mrs. Stella Winchell and Mrs. Edith Johns of Jamaica, a half sister, Mrs. Nora Forkner of Jefferson; half brother, Norman Nicholas of Dawson. Also seven grandchildren who are Verda, Vernon and Daryl McDowell, Don Blayne, Larry and Aretta Kay Nicholas, and Leon Fisher, besides a number of other relatives and friends. One brother, Harvey Hiddleson, preceded her in death several years ago.
Funeral services were conducted from the First Methodist Church, Rippey, on Tuesday afternoon, June 29, 1943 by Rev. Earl Raebuck of the U.B.Church in Dawson, Iowa. Interment was made in the Rippey cemetery.

    Unique Wedding Ceremony
While Dawson has never had a sensational wedding, like in an airplana or in "the Little Brown church in the vale," nevertheless a very unusual ceremony took place Thursday morning at 10:30 on the roadside about 1 1/2 miles north of Dawson, just over the Greene county line, when Miss Mildred Lewis became the bride of Mr. Donald Nicholas. Rev. W. Z. Henline, pastor of the U.B. church read the marriage service. Those of the wedding party were Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Lewis, parents of the bride, Harold Lewis, brother of the bride, the bride's grandfather, J. E. Tolle and the pastor and his wife.
It was a beautiful sight as these fine young people stood in the sunshine of the open country and plighted their vows in the presence of the minister and loved ones, immediately following the ceremony the newlyweds entered their car and started north for a short honeymoon trip in Minnesota. The wedding party returned to Dawson. Everyone will offer congratulations to the groom for he has chosen for a wife, one of Dawson's loveliest girls, one that will be to him a real helpmate. They will be at home to their friends on their return from their wedding trip in Dawson.

I also have copies of two letters from the War Department and Army Services Forces a year after my Uncle Vandan (Nicholas) was declared MIA.....these two letters are dated a year after his MIA status was

My aunt could not find the letter stating he was MIA....although she said there were two officers who come to the bank she was working at Rippey, Iowa....and asked for directions to Abijah Nicholas' residence. Aunt Marjorie heard them and said she knew why they were there and took the information from them. She then went to Grandpa's house to tell him. (Grandma was deceased at that time).
