She was born December 11, 1906 to Walter Lee and Maude (Bishop) Dodson in Rooks County, Kansas, on the Webster Ranch, between Zurich and Webster. When she was one year old she and her family moved to Simila, Colorado, in a covered wagon to homestead. She attended her first year of school at Simila.
Her family then moved to Lincoln County, Kansas, by covered wagon and lived there for six years. At that time Hazel's dad traded their Colorado Homestead for land northeast of Paradise. While they were living there, Hazel graduated from high school in Paradise and worked at the grocery store for several years.

Hazel moved to Russell in 1972 and was able to live in Elkhart, Kansas a few months at a time, from 1975 to 1978, to be with her grandchildren (Kelby and Gwendolyn Harrell) more. She was able to enjoy this past July 4th week with her family in Elkhart.
