Nellie Porter
Nelle Jane "Nellie" Porter, a 104-year-old resident of Mercer, died today (Monday, Oct. 6, 2003) at the Eastview Manor Care Center in Trenton.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 at the Mercer United Methodist Church. Pastors Max Carmichael and Gary Ponder Williams will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville, IA.
Open visitation and viewing begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service in Princeton. A family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, also at the funeral home.
Mrs. Porter was born in Mercer County near South Lineville on Nov. 18, 1898, the daughter of Joe and Madora Cox Hampton. She was raised and lived most of her life in Mercer County, where she attended the Duncan rural school. Before her marriage, she worked in the Lineville telephone office as a central operator. She was a member of the Mercer United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Porter was married March 1, 1922 in Princeton to Pearl Ira "Toby" Porter, who preceded her in death on Nov. 30, 1971. The couple retired from farming in 1970 and moved to Mercer.
Mrs. Porter is survived by one son, Bobby Porter of Mercer; five grandchildren, Jodi Barron and her husband, John, of Trenton, Dusti Treadwell and her husband, Scott, of Trenton, Michelle Newby of Des Moines, IA, Gary Porter and his wife, Marchella, of Mercer and Joe Turnbach and his wife, June, of Seattle, WA; one sister, Matilda Hickman of St. Joseph; and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Turnbach on Sept. 8, 1996; two sisters, Clementine Greer and Della Atkinson; and a brother, "Bub" Hampton.
