THE GEISZ FAMILY
Contributed by Alice Ehmen

The Geisz family came to Fairhaven Township in 1854. They came from Hesse-Darmstadt in Germany . Ermenrod is the village in Hesse-Darmstadt where Johann Conrad was born in 1789 and lived before coming to Carroll County . No emigration index shows the Geisz?s on passenger lists from the major ports in Germany . It may be that the family immigrated under an assumed name. The Geisz family were educated, as evidenced by Johann Conrad listed as a school teacher. There was a series of revolutions in Germany in 1848 and many people who were educated became involved on the democratic side. Many people fled to avoid being arrested. This might have been the case for the Geisz?s as they seemed to scrupulously avoid mention in county histories even though they lived on the same land from 1855. There is a listing in the 1878 directory.
The family built a house on farm land about 3 miles west of Chadwick and a half mile west of the Black Oak Road on the Chadwick-Argo Fay Road . Those coming to Fairhaven Township were Johan Conrad (1789-1875) his sons: Conrad Geisz(1812-1873) and wife Catherina Jager (1814-88), their daughter, Anna (1837-); Heinrich Geisz (1815-1875) and his wife Elizabeth Semmler (1810-1892) and their daughter Anna (1837-1918) and son Henry (1841-1914). The Conrad Geisz family?s descendents became the Sauer and Richter families of Carroll County .

The following are the descendents of the Heinrich Geisz family. They continued to live on the farm west of Chadwick. It became a Centennial Farm owned by Conrad (1789-1875), Heinrich Geisz (1815-1875), Henry Geisz (1841-1914, Charles Geisz Sr. (1868-1945), Charles Geisz Jr. (1918) and Richard and June (Geisz) Houzenga until 1997.

The children of Heinrich and Elizabeth were Anna who married Jacob Glascock He ran a mill at Malvern , IL and they later moved to Iowa having a family of 9 children. Heinrich and Elizabeth?s other child was Henry who married Catherine Hartman. They had seven children; Charles whose family we will follow later. Henry and Clara did not marry. Anna who married John Tripp and started that Carroll County family; Conrad who married Emma Dahler and they farmed across the road from the original Geisz homestead; (a descendent of this family is Kenneth Geisz and his family of Lanark). Mary who married Conrad Miller from which the Miller family descended, who have and still live in Chadwick; and finally John who married Barbara Howe (John was a mail carrier in Chadwick for many years). Their sons were both school teachers but left Carroll County .

The Charles Geisz Sr?s lived on the Geisz farm from the early 1900 until 1947. Their children were Lila who married Benton Dyson, William who married Erma Heinze, Clara who did not marry but taught school for 35 years and lived in Chadwick, Mildred who married Carl Gengenbach and Charles who married Grace Hoffman.

Lila?s family who lived in Carroll County were David (worked in law enforcement for many years) and Martha Biasi who now lives in Savanna. William Geisz and family lived in the Mt. Carroll area where he was County Superintendent of Highways. His daughter Joyce Dunn lives in Mt. Carroll , her sons Doug and Billy also live in Carroll County . Mildred and Carl Gengenbach farmed west of Mt. Carroll and their son George still farms there and there son William was a teacher and principal in Thomson for many years and now works for the Carroll County Review, Bill?s sons, Scott, Mark and Todd live in Carroll County . Charles Jr. farmed the family farm until 1978. Charles? daughter June and husband Richard Houzenga bought the farm in 1978 and sold the Geisz farm in 1997 but continued farming the land until 2004. They continue living and farming in the Ideal area. Their daughter Heidi Fehlhafer and family live in Mt. Carroll.

The Geisz?s belonged to the Black Oak Lutheran church until 1880 when they were among the founders of Trinity Lutheran Church in Salem Township . The word was that the two churches split over a disagreement on a hymnal. Heinrich who had died in 1875 was buried in the Black Oak Cemetery but when his wife Elizabeth died in 1892 she could not be buried with him. Evidently bitterness still existed. The Geisz family has continued to belong at Trinity Lutheran and to this day has members there. The Charles Geisz Sr. family consisted of 14 grandchildren who all grew up attending Trinity. They still meet for a family reunion each year in July.

In Memory of NINA B EASON

Nina Bertha Eason passed away in Grand Junction, Colorado at the age of 97 on April 4, 2012. Born in Two Buttes, Colorado on March 6, 1915, to John Ralph Nicholas and Bertha Myrtle Mayhood Nicholas, Nina spent her early years on the plains of western Kansas and eastern Colorado.

Much of her childhood was spent on a small farm in eastern Colorado. Known as the "Oasis" due to her father's horticultural skills, the farm was located 12 miles south of Boyero. Her parents raised most of what they required and she rode a horse to attend a small country school. Her world expanded when she left the farm in her early twenties to attend Barnes Business School in Denver.

On June 4, 1939, she married William Jay Eason, "the cowboy next door". Their marriage lasted 57 years until his death on January 8, 1997. Their early years together were spent on ranches across the Colorado plains, but they transitioned to the city with a move to Denver in 1953. It was at that point that she dusted off her business school training and went to work as a secretary at Colorado Metals.

After retiring at age 62, Nina found her true calling as a community leader and an advocate for seniors. It was then that she became actively involved with the American Association of Retired Persons, serving first as president of her local chapter. That was followed by three years as Assistant State Director. She then served as Colorado State Director of AARP from December 1981 to December 1985. It was during those years that she traveled over the state visiting chapters, attending yearly conventions and traveling to Washington DC for meetings. She then served on the Resolutions Committee which set priorities for the next AARP convention and also served on the AARP legislative committee.

In addition to her involvement with AARP, Nina served in 1993 under Mayor Pena on the Commission on Aging, in 1994 as a member of the Denver Regional Council of Governments, and as a board member on OASIS which was a senior activity and study group. Her active involvement continued in 1996 with service on the Denver Commission on Aging. She was also an active participant in efforts to get a senior center in the Barnum Community. It was in that center that she participated in numerous activities to include leading a discussion group for several years that explored many and varied topics.

Throughout all this, she was very active in the Bethany United Methodist Church where she held many offices and received numerous recognitions for her efforts. As age slowed her ability to participate in the many things in Denver that meant so much to her she made the decision to move in October 2003 to the Grand Junction area where she could be closer to family.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law Nick and Marian Eason, granddaughters Christie Frank (Larry) and Karen Eason, and great grandchildren Laura Frank and Philip Frank, as well as many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Bertha Nicholas, her husband William Eason, and sisters Thelma Thompson, Inez Schroeder and Kathryn Inness.

Services for Nina Eason will be conducted at Bethany United Methodist Church at 3501 West 1st Avenue, Denver, Colorado on April13th at 11:00 AM. It is suggested that a donation be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado; 2754 Compass Drive, Suite 377; Grand Junction, CO 81506; or www.hospice.com, in lieu of flowers.

Sidney Clyde Dillinger was born in a sod house on a farm in Sherman County, Kansas, July 3, 1912, to Troy Clyde and Amanda (Thompson) Dillinger. He died October 18, 2008, at the Long Term Care Unit of Jewell County Hospital at the age of 96 years, 3 months, and 15 days. Sidney was the middle child in a family of nine children, and the first boy. When his mother discovered she was expecting, she prayed that if the Lord would give her a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord's service. She never told him about this until he had made his own decision to enter the ministry. He was raised in a very devout Christian home where two mottoes dominated the philosophy of the home: "Do only that which you feel is the will of God for you", and "Here am I, Lord, send me."

Sidney attended elementary school in a one-room school house, graduated from Brewster High School in 1931, and Kansas Wesleyan University in 1935. He received his BD degree from Garrett Biblical Institute in 1938. His first appointment was in 1933 to the Traer Methodist Episcopal Church, in the former Northwest Kansas Conference.

He was married to Eva Tedrow June 20, 1934, and they had three children: Coralyn Kaufman, a registered nurse, of Mankato, Kansas; Rosalie Menhusen, a former high school teacher, of Mankato, Kansas; and Rollin, who became a United Methodist minister, of Wichita, Kansas. Sidney is survived by his wife, Vesta (McCammon) Dillinger, Mankato, Kansas; son-in-law, Jon Menhusen of Mankato, Kansas; six grandchildren, thirty-one step-grandchildren, two brothers, Troy Dillinger of Colby, Kansas, and Dwight Dillinger of Hays, Kansas, and two sisters, Clarice Blakely of Colby, Kansas, and Olga Schwartzkopf of Wakeeny, Kansas.

Sidney held several conference and district offices, and was the second preacher in the Kansas West Conference to receive the Rural Preacher of the Year Award. He used his horses in youth ministry, and for many years he helped in the church youth camps. Sidney and Eva served in the Kansas West Conference until Eva's death April 16, 1976, serving churches in Traer, Palco, Wells, Almena, Kensington, Seldon, Dresden, Rexford, Jennings, Bird City, Sharon Springs, Cunningham, Gypsum, Gem, McCracken, Bazine, Ionia, Esbon, and Odessa. In 1966, Sidney was chosen as one of twelve ministers to dramatize how preachers dressed and traveled to conferences two hundred years ago. With Eva's help he rode horseback from McCracken, Kansas, to Baltimore, Maryland, preaching along the way.

In the fall of 1976, Sidney transferred his conference membership to the Missouri West Conference. He married Hilda Bird, December 25, 1976, and served as a pastor in churches in Osceola, Lowry City, Sheldon and Bronough, Missouri, until his retirement June 1, 1982. During his retirement, they made their home in Bolivar, Missouri, and he served the Flemington-Weaubleau churches for ten years. As part of the celebration of 200 years as a denomination, Sidney and Hilda joined three other people to ride horseback half-way across the continent to tell the story of the Methodist Church and preach an evangelistic sermon. They talked and preached to over 9,000 people and had more than 100 respond to the invitation to come to the church altar for prayer.

In Missouri, he was a state officer of the Optimist Club. In 2007, he received a pin honoring his sixty years as a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Hilda died in 1997. In 1998, Sidney moved to Mankato Kansas, and married Vesta McCammon, June 19, 1999. They enjoyed several winters in Phoenix and traveled to many interesting spots. Though they had only nine and a half years together; they had a deep and abiding love for each other and for God that sustained them through the difficulties of declining health.

A memorial funeral service for the Reverend Sidney C. Dillinger was held Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Dan Dempsey and Pastor Rollin Dillinger, officiating. Music was provided by Lyle Dauner, pianist; Lori Menhusen, soloist, "Amazing Grace", a group of grandchildren, "Daddy's Hands;" duet, Allen and Elaine Smith, "Thank You:" and the congregation sang, "The Circuit Rider Preacher" and "Precious Lord Take My Hand." Inurnment of the cremains was held at 7:30 p.m., at Wichita County Cemetery, Leoti, Kansas. The family suggests memorials to: Harmony United Methodist Church, Kansas Wesleyan University, or Camp Lakeside, be sent in care of the Melby Mortuary, P O Box 384, Mankato, Kansas 66956-0384
