Bennie Barela - Pueblo Chieftain - April 25, 1999 - Bennie Barela, 76, departed this life April 22, 1999, at Parkview Episcopal Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Born on Oct. 12, 1922, in Tollerburg (Trinidad). Served in the U.S. Army during World War II, retired as a security guard for Pueblo Army Depot. Mr. Barela also worked 20 years for Pueblo County Board for Developmental Disabilities. He was a faithful working member of the American GI Forum Pueblo Chapter, DAV Chapter 39, Moose Lodge 19, Eagles Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Barela was wounded during his service time and received a Purple Heart. Preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Charlotte Barela- brothers, Gilbert and Eloy Barela. Survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Theresa Marie Barela- children, LeRoy Gurule, Denver, Rosalie (LeeRoy) Martinez, Nita (Ken) Wheeler, all of Pueblo- nine grandchildren, Cindy Gurule, Rosalie Gurule, both of Arizona, Gary Gurule, Denver, Kortney Roldan, Kristil Roldan Padula, Eric Hernandez, Stephen Hernandez, Johnathan Wheeler, Kendra Wheeler, all of Pueblo- 11 great-grandchildren- sister-in-law, Evelyn Barela, Pueblo- and other relatives and friends also survive. Visitation, noon until 5 p.m. today. Both services, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Rosary vigil, 7 p.m. Monday. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Rev. John Waters, S.J., celebrant. Graveside military honors by Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team at Imperial Memorial Gardens. The Barela family will receive friends at 171 Cornell Circle, and the American GI Forum Hall, 125 E. River St., following the burial rites.

Theresa (daughter of Milizandro Gutierrez and Eulelia Baca) was born on 20 Sep 1922 in Sopris, Las Animas County, Colorado; died on 03 Apr 2003 in Pueblo, Pueblo County, Colorado; was buried in Imperial Memorial Gardens, Pueblo, Pueblo County, Colorado. Theresa M. Barela - Pueblo Chieftain - April 06, 2003 - Theresa M. Barela, 80, departed this life April 3, 2003. Born Sept. 20, 1922, in Sopris, Colo. She was a homemaker known for her tantalizing green and red chile dishes. She also knitted and did crochet work. Her life revolved around her grandchildren. She was a little lady, but when she spoke and gave that certain look, the children knew grandma meant business. Predeceased by her parents, Melisendro and Eulalia (Baca) Gutierrez; her beloved husband of 54 years, Bennie Barela; and several siblings and other relatives. She was a member of the American GI Forum Ladies Auxiliary and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She leaves to cherish her memory children, LeRoy Gurule, Rosalie Martinez, Nita (Ken) Wheeler; sister-in-law, Evelyn Barela; grandchildren, Cindy Gurule, Rosalie Gurule, Gary Gurule, Kortney (Rob Smith) Roldan, Kristil (Brad) Padula, Eric (Karlie Ginther) Hernandez, Stephen Hernandez, John Wheeler, Kendra Wheeler; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as other relatives and friends. The Barela family would like to thank the Sangre de Cristo Hospice for their loving care of our mother. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Rev. James F. Koenigsfeld, celebrant. Interment, Imperial Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends at 171 Cornell Circle.
