My family is thoroughly entrenched in Tennessee.... Grandfather Jonathan Buck and his wife Zuriah Covalt left Bedford County, Pennsylvania after1790 and finally settled in Watauga County, North Carolina. Here they met up with many of the early Baptist families that their families had known in New
    Jersey before the Revolution.
As an indian scout as well as a land owner, Jonathan was well known as a hunter...perhaps a "long rifle man". Several areas in the Watauga were named for him and he may well have hunted with Boone, who as an ordained Baptist minister was not a member of the Sinking Creek Church, was still in the area as a hunter.
The Bucks went into what was to become Carter County, Tennessee and many of their church went with them. The family is still well counted in Tennessee....my paternal grandfather having been born in Fentress County.
Here my great grandfather Isaac Buck purchased the farm of John Clemons (Clements) as this family was about to leave for Missouri. Samuel was well on the way before the family left and of course is known as Mark Twain.
My Buck cousin still owns the farm where remains of the Clemons cabin still stand. The huge stone fireplace and imposing chimney are there to admire.
Next door lies the farm of the York family. Alvin York, America's WWI hero, was born on this farm. My grandfather was raised with these people and the Bucks and Yorks did marry.
As you can see, most of my roots ended up as southerners...even the Bucks, with their early Connecticut Yankee beginnings.

The Oldest Church in the State of Tennessee

Posted April 14th, 2008 by sinkingcreekSinking Creek Baptist Church is named for a tributary of the Watauga River. It is located on the Old Elizabethton to Johnson City Highway in Carter County. It is the oldest church of any faith in the state of Tennessee still in existence at its original location. It was organinzed 1772 in Washington County (now Carter County). Matthew Talbot was the first pastor. Worship services have continued through the years except during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865.In 1778 evangelists Charles and John Chastain, brothers from Virginia, held a revival here and the need for a larger church was realized. Pastor Talbot, Joshua Kelly, and a Mr. Maulkey planned and erected what is now known as the "Old Log Church" that still stands today with many of its' original logs intact. Worship and an occasional wedding is held there mostly in the summer months. Because of its' legendary past it is now a historical landmark. It shares the same grounds with the new church built in 1962.Rev. Reece Harris is the current pastor to the congregation at Sinking Creek. He has faithfully served as pastor since 1961.

I must apologize for my bad manners of not having introduced myself to each and every one of you. I am Catherine Quarles Buck. Most of my family call me "Kitty". I was born in White County, Tennessee on May 10, 1827. My parents are William Hawes Quarles and Ruth Hyder. My father William was born on March 13, 1794 and he was the son of William Pennington Quarles who was born in Bedford County, Virgina in 1752 and died in 1840. My grandfather William Pennington served in the Revolutionary War and was a Major in the Army. My grandmother, Nancy Anne Hawes was born in 1764 and died in 1844. They are both buried in White Plains. My mother Ruth has already passed from this world. She was born on April 22, 1803 and left us on October 27, 1858. Her parents were Jacob Hyder and Hannah Rockwell. Grandpa Jacob was born on January 16, 1770 in Charlotte, NC and passed away on May 18, 1854. My Grandma Hannah is still with us. She was born on January 25, 1780. The Quarles Family goes back to the 1500's coming from Norfolk, England.

My husband Enoch was born on April 12, 1827 and also comes from a rather distinguished family. We were married on April 6, 1846. Enoch?s grandfather was Jonathan Buck, born January 12, 1755 in Bedford, County, Pennsylvania. He also served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. George Enslow?s Company of the Bedford County Frontier Rangers. Jonathan was married to Zuriah Covalt. She was born on February 24, 1756 also in Pennsylvania. They had 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls. They left Pennsylvania sometime in the late 1790's and moved to Carter County, Tennessee. Jonathan was a Minister in the Methodist Church and was sent to minister at the Sinking Creek Methodist Church in Carter County. Sinking Creek is the oldest church building to this day in the State of Tennessee. But Zuriah died in 1819, I guess that kind of took something out of Jonathan and he was eventually dismissed from the church for being intoxicated and using profane language. Somthing that I dare say a lot of the Bucks do to this day. Jonathan then followed three of his sons to what is White County, Tennessee. Jonathan died on March 19, 1831 and is buried here on the farm.

My father-in-law is Isaac, Jonathan and Zuriah?s 12 child. He is a very intelligent man. His wife is Mary Simmerly. His brother Abraham married Mary?s sister Margaret. Isaac is fluent in 6 languages and also just recently started a school called Andrew?s College, but most folks around the county call it Buck?s College. They also own a store in town. Isaac too, is a Methodist minister and is one of the founding Members of the Salem Methodist Church here in Putnam Co.

So both the Buck and Quarles family have something to be proud of. Two Revolutionary War Soldiers, who fought for the independence and freedom that this fairly young country was established on. A country that won her independence from England to have the right to govern herself. Something that seems to be facing us again with the talk of the Southern States wanting to secede from the Union and have the right to govern themself as they choose. I try not to think of such matters. They are so disturbing and the thought of another War can only bring heartache to this country of ours. There must be some other way to settle these differences of opinions that the States have on Slavery and State?s rights. But at the present, it looks like a War will be certainly decided upon. And that will tragic to this whole Country.
