Description: I have Luella Mae Smith's family information on my Rootsweb.com tree, "The Downing, Bickelhaupt, And Preston Families of Carroll County, Illinois." Right now I have her name as Suellen, but I'm changing that and planning to upload new information onto this tree later today. I'm fairly certain her name began as Luellen. Her parents were Oscar and Adelia (Roberts) Smith. They lived in the area of Mount Carroll Township, Carroll County, Illinois known as Center Hill; it is along what is now Highway 52 just east of the Center Hill Church and Cemetery. The house is still there; I can't remember who owns it. Oscar, Adelia, and some of their other children are buried in that cemetery. The Carroll County Birth Certificates Index, on the cyberdriveillinois website, has Luellen Smith's date of birth as May 1, 1913, not 1912.
I'm not a direct relative. My mother grew up on a farm just east of the Smith's. I have a lot of this information, including tombstone photos for Center Hill Cemetery, on the Genealogy Trails website, http://www.genealogytrails.com/ill/carroll.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Law-Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Boyd Ellefon of York Community Church officiating. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery. Mrs. Groharing was born April 14, 1907 in Mt. Carroll to Oscar and Adelia Roberts Smith. She married Vernon Groharing, Jan. 22, 1927. He died Jan. 7, 1987. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crafts, crocheting and rug braiding. Survivors include a son, Herbert of Davenport; five grandchildren and 6 great grandchildre; a sister, Mrs. Suella Ehredt of Thomson. She was preceded by two sister.

OSCAR WILLIAM SMITH , 68, died at 11:10 Friday Night at his home in Center Hill west of Mt. Carroll. Services were held Sunday afternoon in the home with Rev. R.H. Sietner officiating. Burial was in Center Hill Cemetery. He was born Jan. 13, 1871 in Carroll Co. son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Smith. On June 29, 1889 married Azelia (s/b Adelia) Roberts. Surviving are his widow, four daughters - Mrs. Grant Bundy, Mrs. John Foley of Savanna, Mrs. Verne Groharing and Mrs. Martin Ehredt of Massbach, 11 grandchildren, three brothers, Elmer, Orville and Emery of Mt.
